How do You Handle Anxiety During a Big Move

Let’s face it, there’s a lot involved when it comes to moving. This fact is especially true if you’re moving out of state or across the country. The very idea of packing up your entire life for a new area can leave some feeling… well, a little overwhelmed.

And this is perfectly understandable. Moving involves so many steps, and there is often a risk of broken items or other hiccups along the way. And we haven’t even mentioned acclimating to your new home and area!

So, how do you deal with any anxiety or stress that comes along with moving? Because my team has helped countless people buy and sell homes, in Southwest Florida and beyond, we have a few tips that might help. Of course, we’re always happy to hear what you’ve found that works too!

Use a trusted moving company

If you aren’t packing and moving all your items yourself, please make sure to hire a moving company with a trusted reputation. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen someone hire a cheaper company to save a few bucks, but their reputation was off… and the results were often very stressful. Save yourself a headache and go with a reliable source.

Create a full checklist for the move

I’m a big proponent of making checklists for just about everything. It eases the worry of wondering if a critical step or task was done at the end. Instead of guessing, you can simply check your list. It also helps to keep you on track, which can greatly reduce feelings of anxiety as you see yourself making positive progress.

Channel your energy into project planning

Even though you might not be able to start upgrading your new home just yet that doesn’t mean that you can’t start planning. Now, I know a move can be a huge undertaking, leaving little room for much else. But in your downtime, take some of that burden off by browsing decorating websites or looking at new furniture. These simple activities can help remind you of what you’re working toward.

Rely on friends and family for help

Another way that I like to ease any stress is to turn to my family and friends for help during the move. Whether they’re moving furniture or just picking up boxes, your friends and family provide support and help you check off items on your moving checklist. And at the end of moving day, you can sit back and relax with them for a minute!

Give yourself plenty of time

Hands down, one of the biggest tips, however, is to give yourself time. I always recommend starting early and doubling the time you think it will take to move. This ensures that if there are any snags, you don’t have to worry about them because you’ll know you’re still ahead of schedule. This can make all the difference in the world.

I’d love to hear what tips you recommend for a big move. Share them with all of us in the comments!
