In the past, we’ve seen how the Ca’ d’Zan in Sarasota has some really good lessons for your home. But we’re not finished yet! In reality, Southwest Florida historic homes can give us all sorts of interesting ideas for our own homes. This is especially true of one world-famous historic piece of Southwest Florida real estate… the Edison and Ford Winter Estates.
For those of you who haven’t visited this home yet, it is 21 acres of waterfront property that is well worth the trip. Built in 1886, the home served as Edison’s winter snow birding destination. He also had a lab on-site, but the real draw is the lush gardens he created throughout the area. As one of the most visited historic homes in the world, there’s so much inspiration we can draw from it.
Go wild with your plants
What makes this property incredibly special is the diverse plants that span the entire property. If you look at old photos, it was once covered in a way that’s unimaginable. But when you add lots of native plants, especially beautiful fruit trees, you get an outdoor pantry and a lovely spot to enjoy.
Install picture railing
One decorating solution that I noticed about this property is the picture railing. Instead of putting tons of holes in the walls of your home, Ford and Edison opted for a different idea. When you install a picture rail, you add a new detail to your home and an easy way to hang your art easily.
Add a stunning visitor feature
Another aspect of this Southwest Florida property is the fountain outside. Because of how it’s placed on the property, visitors are treated to a stunning visual as they arrive, either by boat or by land. Adding a feature like this to your own property can really create an impression.
Invite your friends over!
And on that note, one of the other lessons that struck me was how Edison and Ford loved to have people over. They would constantly entertain guests, letting them experience this wonderful property for themselves. Even today, we’re guests too! By inviting friends over to your home, you’re elevating it to more than just a place; you’re making it a home all your own.
