Not long ago, we saw how SWFL is an outdoor lover’s dream come true. It doesn’t matter if you’re into fishing, boating, hiking, or camping, the area is filled with opportunities to take advantage of. And, even though many of our natural wonders get plenty of attention, so many of them stay under the radar. Sure, places like Siesta Key Beach are absolutely amazing, and for good reason. However, Southwest Florida’s story is so much bigger than that. So, today, we’re going to discover three more hidden natural treasures of our area that make owning local real estate totally worth it.
Myakka River State Park in Upper SWFL
With views you can hardly believe, Myakka River is also filled with lumbering alligators and beautiful birds that you can observe from several vantage points. This spot is known for its sunsets, when the sky is streaked with gorgeous colors that frame the wild around you. This state park is a well-kept secret that locals love, especially photographers. I would also recommend checking out the canopy walk while you’re there. Suspended high up in the trees is a lot of fun. It also helps that this spot is close to Sarasota and all the other amenities that part of SWFL offers.
Lovers Key and Black Island in Mid-SWFL
What can I say about Lovers Key and Black Island? First, you hardly ever hear about these in the national news or any “best of lists.” Yet, they are, without question, one of our hidden natural treasures. Whether you’re into kayaking or just a nice walk on a semi-secluded beach, this string of islands is great. You’ll be in love with the picturesque landscape as you experience this outdoor treasure. You might even be surprised to find out that it wasn’t long ago that this island was only accessible by boat. Now, however, you have a chance to explore it even if you don’t own a seaworthy vessel!
Fakahatchee Strand Preserve in Lower SWFL
Finally, let’s talk about the Fakahatchee Strand. This hidden outdoor treasure isn’t for the faint of heart. You’ll want to come completely prepared and likely during the cooler seasons. That’s because the preserve bumps up against the fabled Everglades. It’s a truly adventurous place, best seen with a trusted, expert guide. You can also experience guided tours during swamp walks and canoe trips. But I’m sure you’ll agree after visiting, that as the “Amazon of the North Americas,” its untamed landscape is a thing of remarkable beauty.
