And as your real estate resource, I have a number of tips that can help you best prepare for this lifestyle change. But we’re not talking about one or two tips here, or even three or four. In fact, we’re talking about your GIANT list of prepping tips for tiny house living!

• Take a flexible attitude, especially when it comes to local codes or city authorities. And don’t worry, because there are almost always creative solutions to these issues.
• On that note, work with local building codes the best you can. As the tiny house movement gains a foothold nationally, these codes are expected to change.
• And similarly, feel free to deviate from you initial plans as needed. If you find something isn’t working out for your tiny house living plan, make a change to re-align to your vision.
• And after you have your plan, remember: there are times when you need to forget your fear and go for it. That can mean choosing one sink over another or even one location over another. Don’t let the details bog you down and prevent you from living your dream.
• Use your tiny house to further your financial goals. For many of my clients, that has meant reducing debt and allowing them to live a life of financial freedom. And there’s no reason you can’t have that too.
• Building a tiny house can be tedious sometimes. But persistence is key. The results may be slow to show themselves, but a they WILL show themselves over time.
• If you choose a tiny house community, keep in mind that it will come with its own complexities. But it also connects you with a community of like-minded individuals.
• And with that in mind, those like-minded people can be a resource for shared storage, common spaces, AND utilities. This can go a long way.
• With like-minded friends, you can also share work during the building process, which can make bringing a tiny house to life so much easier.
• Investigate in a variety of materials, and you’ll be able to put a greater focus on design as well as going even smaller.
• Sometimes, if you choose a space that’s very small, you might have to use transforming furniture!
• Don’t forget the importance of light! It becomes even more important in a tiny space regarding how it fills your space.
• And finally, a practice suggestion: consider adding a removable deck to increase livable space. It’s cost-effective and not as difficult as you might think!

Tiny homes can be affordable

If your personal financial goals involve affordability, I’ve known plenty of people that are just like you. And a tiny home can often meet that goal and then some.

They can also offer simplicity

Now, some people are looking for simplicity. What does simplicity look like? Less of what isn’t important to them, often the clutter of unnecessary possessions. And tiny homes give them the ability to live that lifestyle.

Or you might be interested in “green living”

Speaking of lifestyles, what about “going green?” There are many tiny homes that allow you to minimize your impact on the environment in a real way.

You can also choose upscale, but small living

Or maybe you want to live a wonderfully upscale lifestyle. But you want to do it with small living in mind, allowing you to stretch your dollar. If that’s your personal goal, there are tiny home options for you too.

Off-the-grid living is another personal goal

Aside from green living, you might want to live off-the-grid, away from everyone else. Maybe you even want to disconnect from technology in a big way. With tiny homes, you have the option to choose styles and locations that get you away from it all to live on your terms.

Or perhaps you’d like more mobility

And if travel is part of your personal goals, you’re going to love what tiny homes have to offer. Now, as we’ve talked about before, there’s nothing that says that a tiny home has to have wheels. But it’s not hard to find models that do, allowing you to live almost anywhere!

What about getting a deeper connection?

Whether you want to get more in touch with nature or those closest to you, tiny homes can give you both. From a tiny house located in a serene outdoor location to a space dedicated to conversation, there are styles that fit both needs.

Or maybe location is everything for you

But what about sacrificing space for location? Maybe your personal goal is to live in one of the most exciting cities in the world. And you’re willing to give up a little space to make it happen. In cities across the world, from New York City to San Francisco, tiny homes are popping up to fill this personal goal too.

But how do you know if tiny house living is right for you? Don’t worry, because with my real estate guidance, you’ll get a few excellent tools to help you make the decision.

Evaluating Your Day-to-Day

The first place I recommend home buyers start is with a bit of personal reflection regarding your day-to-day. Tiny house living is often a moderate chance in pace, and you want to ensure it lines up with how you envision what’s most important to you. How can you do that? I’m so glad you asked! Take a moment to run through this bullet list.

• Take some time to visualize your usual daily routine. You don’t have to focus on specifics but remember how you feel most often throughout your day.
• Now list your usual tasks, routines, and schedules. Adding time estimates can be helpful as well if you wish as we get into the specifics of your day-to-day.
• Then create a separate list of items you think will be essential for day-to-day life. Think of those everyday items you simply can’t do without.

All done? One more step. We’re going to answer a VERY important question related to what you’ve written. And that is…

If you had MORE TIME in this world & could spend however you choose, what would you do?

Jot the answer down next to your lists you’ve put together.

Taking Your Personal Inventory

Now that we have some of the nuts and bolts down on paper, let’s move on to you. Yes, you! Who you are or would like to be is a big factor in tiny house living. Didn’t I say this was all about personal reflection?

So now, write down five of your personal strengths or virtues. Here’s my five to help get you started:

1. Financially savvy – took $5k to millions of dollars in just over a decade.
2. Giving – have helped thousands of people attain their real estate goals
3. Efficient – organized and ready to focus on what’s needed
4. Persistent – attaining financial freedom isn’t always easy, but with persistence, you can accomplish it
5. Trusting – sure, I still ensure people earn my trust, but I love empowering those around me to do more through that mutual respect.

Now, a few more questions that are very important. We’re almost there!

• What are your five personal weaknesses or challenges?
• What are your priorities in life?
• Think back to your WORST times: How did you react to a problem or struggle? How did that impact you as a person? What did you learn?
• Think back to your best times: What made you HAPPY ? How did you handle things? What did
• you learn?
• What do you consider your personal identity to be? What would you like it to be?
• What REGRETS do you have? Is there a way to avoid repeating them?
• Who is important in your life? How do you make space for them?

Some of these aren’t so easy, but they’re also good to get down before you make the jump to tiny house living. Take your time.

And more importantly, is it right for you? Today, you and I are going to explore what defines a tiny house and how you can tell if this lifestyle is right for you.

How Tiny is a Tiny House?

You’ll probably be very surprised to learn that a tiny house isn’t about square footage at all! In essence, it’s also not about space-saving storage either. Or any particular style or design. Let’s dispel a few other myths before we look at the true definition for tiny homes.

MYTH: a tiny house must be on wheels

FACT: your tiny home can be mobile if you want. Or not at all! Nothing says that you have to have wheels on your tiny house.

MYTH: tiny houses are only for dense, overcrowded cities

REALITY: people across the country, in big cities and rural areas, have chosen tiny homes. In fact, you could buy 100 acres if you wanted, only to set-up a tiny house of your own right on it!

MYTH: a tiny home always uses cheap, inferior construction

REALITY: if you’ve seen the images of ultra-modern tiny homes, you know that this one simply isn’t true. The sky’s the limit when it comes to your tiny home, whether you want to go affordable or super posh. 

So then, what is a tiny home? 

A tiny house is a structure that provides you with everything you need to live your life. But it also does so in the most efficient cost-effective manner possible.

Wait though, there’s more! It also makes it possible to improve your quality of life and interactions, while realizing your dreams. It’s more than just a home; it’s an entire lifestyle and a way of thinking.

But you don’t have to worry. After managing millions of dollars’ worth of real estate, I’ve come up with a simple criterion you can use for tiny homes. If it…

From super-tiny houses to modest and quaint homes, you can have your pick on a cost-effective budget. Best of all, if you want you can still have all the upgrades like top-of-the-line appliances. The movement also brings with it ideas about the effective use of space and aesthetics to give us a lifestyle based less on consuming and more on enjoying. And with today’s tiny house Instagram roundup, you’ll see just what we mean!

A Quaint and Beautiful Tiny House

For those of you who might think that tiny houses have to be on wheels, you’ll love this one. This one goes to show you that a house can be a home, no matter how tiny. It’s cute and lovely, not to mention that porch looks fantastic!

The Use of Space in Tiny Homes

This Instagram tiny house gives you a nice perspective on the use of space. Now, this home appears to be pretty small. Yet, you can see that even in this tiny space you can fit in all the basics.

Highlight the Most Important Things

I truly enjoy how this tiny home uses space to show off what’s important to this person: a little book nook. Through the effective use of space, this tiny home still makes room for what this person loves most in life.

The Space Beyond the Walls

Still, the tiny house movement is just as much about the space outside your home as inside. And you can see that perfectly with this home, nestled into the wooded property that these homeowners probably enjoy a great deal.

Your Design Choices

This one is another quaint cabin that caught my eye. If you haven’t yet seen A-frame houses, they are rather popular in the tiny house movement. But this is just one possibility among so many, from mobile tiny homes to hidden cabins.

Tiny Houses in Southwest Florida

So as your Southwest Florida real estate agent, you know I just had to share this one with you! This little community, located in Siesta Key, Florida, is SWFL’s own @tinyhousesiesta. Check out the photos, and I’m sure you’ll fall in love!

Old-World Minnesota Tiny Home

This one also caught my eye, because it’s a touch bigger than our other examples, showing you just how many possibilities there really are. I also like how it breaks the mold and goes for a look that’s not super contemporary nor cabin-style.

However, if you want cutting-edge technology in your tiny home, you can have that too! This tiny home did exactly that with a wonderful row of solar panels to help with that energy bill.

Tiny Houses are about Big Lifestyles

Finally, I think this Instagram photo shows us what’s behind this growing movement: the desire to create lifestyles for ourselves that allow us to focus on what’s most important to us like family and friends. And as a Southwest Florida real estate agent, this sense of community and togetherness is what I love to help my clients attain, whether they want a tiny home or any option that works for them.

Just recently, we explored some of the myths behind the tiny house movement. And many of you had some insightful comments that got me thinking even more. When it comes down to it, this movement highlights different trends and attitudes that have been developing across the globe. But at the same time, reading all your thoughts gave me perspective from the diverse areas we live in.

On that note and now that we’ve dispelled the myths, I thought how, together, we could dive in and capture what’s shaping the tiny house movement. From Southwest Florida to San Francisco, it’s clearly a development that has us re-thinking what we can call “home.” So, without further ado, here are 5 principles about the tiny house movement.

It’s about defining your lifestyle of simplicity

One thing I heard from several of you is how the tiny home lifestyle can be as basic as you need. For some home buyers, that might mean a stripped down, minimalist lifestyle. For others, it might mean a smaller home where they can showcase their elegant decorating sense. Tiny homes allow you to define what simplicity means for your life.

The tiny house movement comes in all shapes and sizes

After all, what’s right for a family of 4 in North Carolina might be totally different from the lifestyle a young professional couple needs in San Diego. And that’s perfectly okay! Just like you can define how you embrace simplicity in your tiny home, you also can choose whether that means an A-frame cabin in the woods or an ultra-modern pre-fab house.

Millennials are especially attracted to the movement

Because the tiny house movement is, at its heart, about learning to live with less for your lifestyle, it also means Millennials are interested in the trend. In fact, all you have to do is ask one question when you talk to a young home buyer to see what I mean. When you ask, “have you heard of the tiny house movement?” you’re almost certain to get a positive response.

You can raise a family in a tiny home

It might seem unimaginable to consider a family of 4 in a small airstream. But because we’ve seen how tiny homes are all about diverse choices and choosing your lifestyle, you can see how there’s nothing wrong with raising a family in a tiny home. In fact, can you believe that this family of 4 made it happen in just about a 200 square foot tiny home!?

It’s really fun to browse the creativity online

Another awesome principle of the tiny house movement is how easy it is to find them online. And it’s not hard to imagine why with examples like that 200 square foot home. The movement is defined by creativity, and people are very eager to share that creativity that is transforming lives everywhere.
