NEW YORK – Oct. 23, 2018 – The top recommendation for a U.S. retirement? Lancaster, Pa. But three Florida cities – Fort Myers, Sarasota and Lakeland ranked in the top 10.

Fort Myers took the No. 2 spot in U.S. News & World Report’s 2019 list of the “100 Best Places to Retire in the USA.” According to this year’s review, Lancaster’s housing affordability and residents’ high rank for happiness helped it to bump Sarasota, Fla., from the number one position that it held last year.

Sarasota was ranked as the third top spot for retirement in 2019, but a non-coastal Florida city, Lakeland, held down the No. 10 spot.

To come up with a ranking, U.S. News & World Report evaluated the country’s 100 largest metro areas to see how well they met retirees’ expectations, such as in housing affordability, desirability, health care, and overall happiness.

“Deciding where to retire is a big decision,” says Emily Brandon, senior editor for retirement. “The ‘Best Places to Retire’ offers a way for future retirees to make a more informed decision based on what matters the most to them. Whether that be housing affordability, access to quality hospitals, or the desirability of a place in general, the rankings offer a comprehensive list that can point people in the best direction for their needs.”

As you can imagine, vacation homes in Southwest Florida are incredibly popular. And every year, people from all over the country (and the world) flock to our sandy shores to spend time. Whether they’re coming for a week or a few months, it’s a good idea to prepare your principal residence before you head off.

Because we live in a very popular vacation area, and I’ve helped so many clients find vacation homes, I’ve picked up a few tips on the subject. Best of all, all of these are fairly simple and easy to check off your list before you embark for our world-class beaches and amenities.

Let a neighbor know you’re leaving

Even if I’m just going away for the weekend, I like to let a neighbor know. This can provide you peace of mind as they keep an eye out on your property.

Schedule your lighting

If you haven’t yet grabbed a cost-effective tool for lighting schedules, I definitely recommend doing so before going on vacation. This way, your home will still look like it’s lived in while you’re away.

Stop the newspaper and mail delivery

On that note, we probably all know this age-old tip. But it always is worth repeating, and you can’t imagine how many times I’ve seen people forget it. You don’t want those papers piling up and signaling your house is empty!

Hire a lawn service

For Southwest Florida property owners, we have many times during the year when grass can grow inches in a week. So, I like to suggest having your lawn service stop by every 2 weeks or so, just to do a trim and touch up the landscaping, so things don’t get overgrown while you’re away.

Take care of your indoor plants

Speaking of plants, you can’t imagine how many people forget their indoor plants before they leave on vacation! If you have a neighbor or a family member stop by once in a while, they can care for your plants; otherwise, another solution will be needed.

Turn up your AC

This is another one that is especially relevant for those of us in Florida and the surrounding states. But it still applies to people throughout the country. Now, I don’t recommend turning off your AC, but merely matching the outside temperature more closely.

Check your garage door lock

We’ve talked about garage door locks previously, and this is one step you shouldn’t skip. The garage is often an entry point for burglars, because it’s less often secured and once they have access, they can easily close the garage door and take their time.

Walk your property

You might be in a hurry to get to that Southwest Florida vacation home but checking over your property ensures you don’t forget anything. From the inside and outside, I do a visual inspection that everything is in its place and as it should be.

But just like any part of the country, there’s a more rich and interesting story right below the surface. Truthfully, once you’ve lived here, you start to appreciate just how amazing it can be. Myth: Southwest Florida real estate is all condos

When you think of homes in Southwest Florida, you might imagine condos as far as the eye can see. And we do, in fact, have plenty of attractive condos if that’s what you’re in the market for. However, SWFL and Florida, in general, both have countless other options, from single-family homes to luxury properties.

Myth: We all live on waterfront property

While Cape Coral has unprecedented access to the water, you don’t have to be right on the water if you don’t want to. In fact, in Southwest Florida, you have the choice. Want to live on a more spacious rural property away from it all? You can do that. What about 15 minutes from the beach, but right in the center of one of our hip downtowns? You can do that too!

Myth: Florida isn’t good for new families

From single college graduates to new families, Florida is incredibly diverse. What this means is that there’s something for you no matter what your lifestyle is. And with growing amenities, including world-class outdoors, new families are more than welcome and the kids are sure to have lots to do!

Myth: It’s always hot

Yes, the summers are warm. But owning a home in Southwest Florida also means no shoveling snow… or dealing with months of endless rainy days. And in reality, our state has very pleasant winters and springs, so much so that snowbirds flock to our shores throughout these times of the year.

Myth: There aren’t many amenities

With a budding food scene, tons of craft breweries popping up, art, entertainment, and outdoors… well, you can see how Florida isn’t just beaches anymore. In the past 5 years, many cities up and down our coast have become hubs for culture and good times.

Myth: Real estate can be expensive

Now, this myth couldn’t be further from the truth. When you want to own a home in Southwest Florida, you have many affordable options. You might even be surprised to discover that our luxury real estate is more affordable compared to other parts of the country!

Mowing the lawn, taking care of the hedges, and power-washing the building. These are all included in most condo units, so you don’t have to worry about them the way you would with a traditional home. This frees you up to really take advantage of your retirement years, instead of doing chores.

When you choose a condo in Southwest Florida, you’re also adding an investment to your family portfolio. With strong growth, properties are continuing to gain value in SWFL, and with a condo, there are several options, from renting to vacation properties. By buying one for retirement, you’re giving your family an asset for their future at the same time.

When people usually think of Southwest Florida, our beautiful beaches and warm weather come to mind. But, those are just two of the amazing benefits of living here!

During wintertime in Southwest Florida, the Gulf of Mexico does turn a little cooler. That doesn’t mean that a stroll along the shores isn’t completely enjoyable. Or that you can’t take part in amenities like fishing, boating, and more.

However, many residents and new homeowners turn their attention to a few of our wintertime amenities that are worth checking out. All of the ones we’ll review today provides a fun outing that’s unique and sure to please.

The Warm Mineral Springs in Sarasota

Known as the Fountain of Youth itself, the warm mineral springs are one of Southwest Florida’s most hidden amenities. It’s not that the springs are difficult to get to, it’s simply that residents often don’t share this secret. So, when the beaches turn cooler, you can turn to the only warm springs in all of Florida.

Prepare for the State’s Fruit Festivals

In January, there are a number of festivals that are a ton of fun to attend. From the Florida Citrus Festival to the Key Lime Festival, throughout the state, you can celebrate our local economy and landscape.

Lunch at One of Our Trendy Restaurants

As just about any snowbird will tell you, when the weather cools down here, it’s time to get outside. And if you’re looking for something relaxing to do, hitting our growing foodie scene is one excellent choice. Many locations have outside seating that really lets you take advantage of the lower humidity, all while tasting what our area has to offer.

The Fakahatchee Strand for a Hidden Treasure

While hiking and camping in Southwest Florida is a popular activity throughout the year, this time of year it really takes off. That’s because with the cooler weather comes a decrease in the number of insects that may be about. For this wintertime, I’m highlighting one of our special natural treasures, the Fakahatchee Strand. Now, this is not for the faint of heart, but if you love the outdoors, now’s the time to consider exploring this spot.

Take in the Art at our Area Museums

From the world-class art at the Ringling to international contemporary art just a hop away in Miami, Florida offers much on the art scene. This is one of my favorite amenities because you get to experience the rich cultural scene that exists right under the surface here in our area.

A Trip to Key West by Boat

Finally, if you simply must take a dip at the beach, I recommend the Key West Express. Many visitors, and even some residents, are completely unaware that the fabled island of Key West is only a couple hours away when you take this boat. The trip is relaxing and beautiful, and when you arrive, the beaches may be just a touch warmer.

When it comes to holiday traditions, we have plenty of them! These traditions are all distinctly SWFL, and all of them make the holidays a special time with friends and family. Most of them are also good if you have children or grandchildren around the house. Of course, when you own a Southwest Florida home, you can participate in all of these!

Whether it’s the garden festival or the holiday lights, this is a must-visit. And during the holidays, it comes alive that much more. When you take a tour of the property you can get inspiration for your own home and learn more about the history of our area. Either way, during the holidays, this one can’t be missed.

Decorate your Seaworthy Vessel

One traditional you’ll quickly discover when you own a Southwest Florida home is how much we love to decorate our boats and other vehicles. It can be a jet ski or a sailboat, a catamaran or a yacht… the idea remains the same: you have to add a little holiday flare to any seaworthy vessel when you live in Florida! For a few ideas, try a jolly seasonal sign, rigging a holiday light system, or just a string or two of garland.

Give an Orange as a Gift

While it might sound a touch old fashioned, this tradition is popular even among young people. With some of the best citrus in the world, our residents love to give each other a treat or two during the holidays. It can be a ripe orange, a tasty cutie, or even a homegrown grapefruit. It’s even more special if you grew it on the tree in the backyard of your home!

Relax with family in the Adirondack Chairs

This is one of my favorites during the holidays in SWFL. Once the weather has started to cool down, residents spend that extra bit of time outside together. And there’s no better way to do that than with a set or two of Adirondack chairs. These attractive seats can be placed on the front porch of your Southwest Florida home or on the area by your pool. And like I always say, spending time with friends and family during the holidays, especially in SWFL, is truly magical. Check the link if you’re a handyman…or woman!

Many snowbirds visiting Southwest Florida love to enjoy our golf courses. Copperhead, Old Corkscrew, Tiburon. This is just the start! Florida is known for a number of challenging courses that will keep any snowbird with a passion for golf busy for a long time.

Shop the outlet stores

From Sanibel Island to Ellenton, snowbirds also have the chance to hit our name brand outlet stores. We’re talking about some of the biggest brands in the world. And they’re all selling discounted clothing, home items, and much, much more.

Get upscale at Saint Armands

Another of Southwest Florida’s best kept secrets is Saint Armands Circle. I love to recommend it to my clients. With upscale, but quaint shopping and a ton of great places to eat, it’s worth checking out. My clients also love how relaxing it can be, all while having a bustling, exciting feel to it.

Drive to areas like Sanibel for SWFL real estate

So many parts of our area are like something out of a postcard or a magazine. Moreover, when you’re a snowbird on the hunt for SWFL real estate, you’ll want a chance to see all your options. A scenic drive down the coast, or on islands like Sanibel, can show you all the possibilities.
